What is Qigong?
Qigong is a traditional Chinese practice that combines gentle movement, breathing, relaxation and focused attention. The word qigong can be translated roughly as “working with energy” or “cultivating energy,” although there are many different styles and ways of practicing.
Some qigong exercises involve movement, while others are practiced standing or sitting quietly. What they share is an emphasis on moving comfortably, breathing naturally and bringing greater awareness to the body.
Qigong does not require unusual flexibility, athletic ability or previous experience. The movements can be adapted to individual needs and are meant to be practiced without strain.
What Do We Do in Class?
Our Thursday class practices Roots & Branches Qigong, a varied sequence of gentle exercises involving movement, stretching, breathing, balance and relaxation.
Some exercises are simple repeated movements. Others involve standing quietly and paying attention to posture, breathing or sensations in the body. We also use gentle self-massage and other practices intended to release tension and encourage comfortable, coordinated movement.
The atmosphere is relaxed. There is no long sequence to memorize, and you don't need to remember what we did the previous week in order to participate.
Why Practice Qigong?
People practice qigong for many of the same reasons they practice tai chi: to improve balance and coordination, maintain mobility, reduce unnecessary tension and develop greater awareness of the body.
Qigong can also provide a quiet break from the speed and distraction of ordinary life. Moving slowly and paying attention to breathing and physical sensation can have a naturally calming and meditative quality.
The exercises are simple, but that doesn't mean there is nothing to learn. With continued practice, familiar movements can become opportunities to notice increasingly subtle patterns of tension, balance, breathing and attention.
Qigong at Tai Chi Olympia
Unlike our Tai Chi classes, which are progressive and involve learning a form over time, Roots & Branches Qigong is drop-in friendly. Each class stands largely on its own, so new students can begin at any time.
You are welcome to attend regularly or simply come when your schedule permits. Exercises are demonstrated and practiced together, and modifications can be made when a particular movement isn't comfortable.
Beginners are welcome. No previous experience is necessary.
